Southend United may have doubled their revenue last season, but the National League club still found themselves in the red to the tune of £1.34 million. The Shrimpers' latest financial report for 2024-25 reveals a revenue boost to £5.1 million, thanks in large part to £1.7 million from Wembley ticket sales during last year's play-off final. However, the club's dreams of returning to the English Football League were dashed once again this week, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Scunthorpe United in the play-offs.

Despite the setback, Chairman Justin Rees remains optimistic. In a message to supporters, he acknowledged the shared disappointment but urged fans to look ahead. "We all share the same ambition to return to the EFL, and we will continue to move forward together," Rees said. He highlighted the upcoming FA Trophy final against Wealdstone on Sunday, 17 May, as a golden opportunity to bring silverware back to Roots Hall. "Whilst promotion was our primary goal this season, we now have another important opportunity ahead of us. The opportunity to win a trophy, especially on the grand stage of Wembley, is something we should never take for granted," he added.

The financial outlook for the 2025-26 season is projected to improve, with losses forecast to drop by just over £1 million. However, overheads are expected to rise to £1.89 million, up from £1.27 million in the previous two seasons. These figures represent the first full financial year since the club was taken over in July 2024. The report notes that while the late completion of the takeover had some impact—particularly on early-season performance—the club showed strong progress over the course of the year.

Off the pitch, the focus has been on stabilizing operations and improving infrastructure, all while continuing to invest in the playing squad. Rees expressed gratitude to head coach Kevin Maher, his staff, and the players for their "efforts and professionalism," and thanked supporters for their unwavering backing after the Scunthorpe loss. With the FA Trophy final on the horizon, there's still plenty to play for—and plenty of reasons for fans to don their club colors with pride.
