A look at Dan Lanning’s first 4 seasons as head coach

When you think of the Oregon Ducks over the past four decades, one word comes to mind: consistency. From 1977 to 2008, the program had just two head coaches, a remarkable stretch of stability that transformed the Ducks from a mid-70s afterthought into a national powerhouse. But between 2009 and 2021, the story flipped. In just 12 years, Oregon cycled through four different head coaches—none lasting more than four seasons. That's twice as many changes as the previous 31 years combined.

Now, as Dan Lanning enters his fifth season at the helm, he's poised to become the first Oregon head coach since Mike Bellotti to surpass that four-season mark. It's a milestone worth celebrating, especially given the whirlwind of turnover that defined the years before his arrival.

Last offseason, I took a deep dive into the tenures of those four transition coaches—Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, Willie Taggart, and Mario Cristobal—exploring the myths that shaped their legacies. With Lanning now completing his fourth season (matching the exact tenure of Kelly, Helfrich, and Cristobal), it felt like the right time to evaluate him through a similar lens.

At first, I struggled with how to frame this. For the other coaches, fanbase myths had grown over time—some positive, some negative—that needed either debunking or confirming. But with Lanning still active and fresh in our minds, those foggy memories haven't had time to form. So instead, I asked myself: How would I define Dan Lanning as an Oregon head coach? The answer came down to one word: balance.

Aside from his first season, when he was installing a new defensive scheme with personnel mismatches, Lanning's teams have been remarkably balanced. On offense and defense, in the run game and the pass game, down to each individual position unit, his attention to detail is his greatest strength. He doesn't just focus on one side of the ball—he elevates every aspect of the team to a high level.

There are plenty of ways to illustrate this. One simple metric I considered was taking each team's Offensive F+ Ranking and subtracting their Defensive F+ Ranking. The lower the number, the more balanced the squad. And by that measure, Lanning's Ducks are among the most well-rounded in recent program history.

Whether you're a die-hard Duck fan or just love great football coaching, Dan Lanning's run so far is a masterclass in building a complete team. And as he steps into his fifth season, the foundation he's laid is as solid as any in Oregon's storied past.
