Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba arrived in the NFL with a significant question mark: his hamstrings. After being limited to just three games in his final season at Ohio State due to persistent hamstring issues, his durability was a concern. However, a simple yet revealing foot scan upon joining the Seahawks provided a surprising solution.

The team's director of equipment, Erik Kennedy, recently shared the story. When Smith-Njigba was drafted in the first round in 2023, the Seahawks performed a detailed foot scan—a practice they pioneered in the NFL. The scan revealed he had been wearing a size 12 shoe in college, but his actual foot measured a 10.5. This substantial misfit was likely contributing to his hamstring tightness and problems.

"You’re always trying to find little edges that can help players," Kennedy explained. Correcting his footwear to the proper size had an immediate impact. Since that adjustment, Smith-Njigba's availability has been remarkable. He has played in all 51 regular-season games over his first three seasons, plus three playoff games, effectively putting his injury concerns behind him.

This story underscores a critical but often overlooked aspect of athletic performance: proper gear fit. Kennedy emphasized the Seahawks' philosophy of customization, from scanned cleats and shoulder pads to top-tier helmets, all tailored to the individual athlete's body. It's a powerful reminder that the right equipment isn't just about performance—it's foundational to health and longevity on the field.
