Florida State and Georgia agreed to cancel their football series in 2027 and 2028, citing conference schedule mandates, they announced Thursday.

In a move that reflects the ever-changing landscape of college football, Florida State and Georgia have officially canceled their highly anticipated home-and-home series scheduled for 2027 and 2028. The decision, announced jointly on Thursday, comes as both programs navigate the challenges of expanded conference schedules.

With the ACC and SEC both moving to nine-game league slates, non-conference matchups have become increasingly difficult to fit into an already packed calendar. Rather than scrap the idea entirely, the Seminoles and Bulldogs are now exploring a neutral-site showdown that could keep this storied rivalry alive in a new format.

"Georgia and Florida State have mutually agreed it is in the best interest of both schools to cancel our home-and-home series scheduled for 2027 and 2028, with the focus shifting to a future neutral site contest between the two programs," said Bulldogs athletic director Josh Brooks. "While we are still early in the process regarding neutral-site plans, we remain optimistic and look forward to further conversations with Florida State."

The series was originally announced back in 2019, promising fans a classic matchup between two powerhouse programs. Georgia holds a commanding 7-4-1 all-time record against Florida State, with their most recent meeting in 2023 ending in a decisive 63-3 victory for the Bulldogs. The two teams also squared off in 2002, adding another chapter to their history.

Florida State vice president and athletic director Michael Alford echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the practical realities behind the decision. "As we considered the effects of evolving scheduling mandates within both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, we have mutually agreed that it is in the best interest of both schools to cancel our home-and-home series scheduled for 2027 and 2028."

For now, fans can look ahead to the upcoming season. The Seminoles will kick off their campaign at home against New Mexico State on August 29 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, while the Bulldogs open against Tennessee State on September 5 at Sanford Stadium in Athens. As for the potential neutral-site clash between these two giants, stay tuned—it could be the next big event on the college football calendar.
