Florida softball made a powerful statement in their NCAA Gainesville Regional opener, crushing Florida A&M 12-0 in a run-rule victory that had head coach Tim Walton grinning from ear to ear.

The game didn't start perfectly. In the first inning, the Gators loaded the bases and pushed across a run, but Cassidy McLellan's flyout stranded three runners—a flashback to some late-season SEC struggles that had fans holding their breath.

But any worries vanished quickly. Over the next four innings, Florida's bats came alive in exactly the way Walton had hoped when he challenged his team to "mash the ball" around Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

The offensive explosion was the Gators' most dominant performance since their 15-2 rout of South Carolina on April 11. Taylor Shumaker and Jocelyn Erickson led the charge, with Erickson smacking three doubles and Shumaker driving in five runs—including a three-run homer in the fifth inning that gave Florida 100 home runs for the season. That milestone marks the fifth time in program history and third consecutive season the Gators have reached triple digits in long balls.

For a team looking to make noise in the postseason, this was exactly the kind of statement win that builds momentum. The Gators showed they can shake off early hiccups and dominate from the circle to the plate—a recipe that could carry them deep into the tournament.
