In a developing story that has sent ripples through Florida high school football, Lake Worth's Santaluces Community head coach Hector Clavijo has been handed a one-year suspension by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) following a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) violation investigation. The news broke Sunday morning via the Palm Beach Post, and it's a stark reminder of how the evolving NIL landscape is reshaping high school sports—and the rules that govern them.

At the heart of the matter is a troubling breach of trust. According to reports, a student-athlete paid Clavijo at least $7,000—$5,000 via bank transfer and $2,000 through Zelle—in exchange for the coach acting as an unlicensed NIL agent and negotiator. The Palm Beach County School District's Office of Inspector General concluded that Clavijo "exploited his relationship with the student athlete," a violation that flies in the face of state law, county policy, and FHSAA Bylaw 9.9. The rule is clear: no school employee, athletic staff member, or booster may engage in NIL representation for student-athletes.

This isn't Clavijo's first brush with discipline. Last month, the Palm Beach County School District's Office issued him a written warning, threatening dismissal if the behavior continued. Now, with the FHSAA stepping in, the consequences are far more severe. Rivals reached out to the FHSAA late last week for an update on the investigation but had yet to receive a response. FHSAA Executive Director Craig Damon had previously confirmed the probe was underway following a July 2025 complaint.

In the wake of the suspension, Santaluces Community has moved quickly to stabilize the program. Assistant coach Samuel Putmon has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the spring season, tasked with guiding the team through this turbulent period.

Clavijo's coaching résumé is undeniably impressive. He led Champagnat Catholic to three FHSAA state championships in 2017, 2019, and 2020, establishing himself as one of Florida's premier high school football minds. Since taking the helm at Santaluces in December 2021, he posted a solid 30-14 record over four seasons, including a 6-4 finish last year. But this suspension puts a significant dent in that legacy and raises tough questions about the pressures and temptations of the NIL era.

For fans, players, and coaches alike, this case serves as a cautionary tale. As NIL continues to transform high school athletics, the boundaries between mentorship, representation, and exploitation are being tested. For now, Santaluces Community must regroup without its leader—and the entire state will be watching to see how the program, and the FHSAA, move forward.
