USA Today Florida Network recruiting reporters give their thoughts on where each of Florida's Power 4 programs stand at the start of spring practices.

The energy around Florida Gators football is electric this spring, and it all starts with new head coach Jon Sumrall. As spring practices kick off across the state, college coaches are hitting the recruiting trail hard—and Gators fans have plenty of reasons to be excited.

While the 2027 recruiting cycle is still in its early stages—things usually heat up in the summer—Florida is already making noise. In just the past two weeks, Louisville snagged commitments from two USA TODAY Florida Network top 100 players, LSU flipped a standout wide receiver from Miami, and Notre Dame kept loading up on Florida defensive backs. But the Gators? They're building something special.

According to USA TODAY Florida Network recruiting reporters Jon Santucci and Nick Wilson, Sumrall and his staff are winning over recruits fast. "Recruits have been raving about the new coaching staff for months," Santucci notes. The early results back that up: Florida has secured commitments from three of the top 20 players on the Florida Network top 100 list, including No. 1 quarterback Davin Davidson (Cardinal Mooney), No. 3 cornerback Amare Nugent (American Heritage), and No. 1 athlete Tramond Collins (Cottondale). Those are three cornerstone pieces for any championship-caliber class.

But the real headliner might be Maxwell Hiller, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive tackle from Pennsylvania. Hiller is a five-star recruit, the No. 1 offensive tackle in the nation, and the No. 3 overall player on the 247Sports composite rankings. Adding a player of his caliber this early in the cycle sends a clear message: Sumrall is serious about competing at the highest level.

What's even more impressive is how Florida is locking down in-state talent. Davidson, Nugent, and Collins are all among the elite in Florida—a state that produces some of the best high school football players in the country. And the momentum isn't slowing down. Key targets like St. Thomas Aquinas safety Zayden Gamble (No. 15), Coral Gables defensive tackle Stive-Bentley Keumajou Yondui (No. 21), and Port Charlotte wide receiver Elias Pearl (No. 32) have scheduled official visits.

Wilson adds, "Recruits have been really drawn to how this coaching staff connects with them." That connection is translating into early wins on the recruiting trail, and for Gators fans, it's a sign that the future is bright. Whether you're stocking up on orange and blue gear for game day or just following the program's rise, Sumrall's early recruiting push is one to watch closely.
