When it comes to building a winning roster, sometimes you have to think outside the box—and that's exactly what Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators are doing. In a bold move that blends athletic versatility with raw potential, Florida has offered a scholarship to Jaylen Jordon, a former Jacksonville basketball player who is making the switch to football.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 240 pounds, Jordon is an imposing presence with the kind of frame that screams "tight end." He first caught the Gators' attention during Florida's Pro Day in March, where he took reps at the position and even received feedback from NFL scouts. Despite suffering a quad injury during the event, Jordon's determination to transition to football hasn't wavered—and Florida is now in the mix to land him.
Jordon's recruitment has picked up serious momentum. He visited Gainesville on Wednesday, meeting with head coach Jon Sumrall, tight ends coach Evan McKissack, and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. The visit clearly left an impression. "We spent our meeting time learning instead of watching slides," Jordon told Swamp247. "I learned some hand signals to get a glimpse of what our sessions would be like if I was to come there."
While Florida appears to be the frontrunner, Jordon isn't without other options. Division II powerhouse Incarnate Word has also extended an offer, making this a two-team race for now. Jordon is a Florida native, hailing from Hilliard High School near the Georgia border. His basketball journey has taken him through Georgia Southwestern State University and Flagler College before landing at Jacksonville, where he averaged 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last season.
With a decision expected sometime next week, the Gators are hoping their unique recruiting approach pays off. For a team always looking to add athleticism and size to the roster, Jordon could be the kind of diamond-in-the-rough that makes a difference on the field—and in the stands, fans will be eager to see him in orange and blue.
