As the curtain falls on another League Two season, Fleetwood Town is making bold moves to reshape their squad for the future. The Cod Army has opened contract talks with three key players while parting ways with seven others, signaling a strategic refresh after finishing 15th in the table—one spot lower than the previous campaign.
At the heart of the retention plans are strikers Ronan Coughlan and Ched Evans, alongside midfielder Harrison Neal. Coughlan, 29, was the club's second-highest scorer in the 2024-25 season before a devastating Achilles tendon rupture sidelined him in January 2025. His return to league action in November was a testament to his resilience, and he managed 15 appearances with two goals last term. Evans, the 37-year-old veteran, is set for a third spell at Highbury after netting six goals in 48 games. Neal, 24, joined from Carlisle in January 2025 and proved his durability by featuring in all but three league matches in 2025-26.
On the flip side, seven players are heading out the door, including midfielder Matty Virtue, who leaves with over 80 appearances and 12 goals for the club. Veteran striker James Norwood also departs, along with defenders James Bolton, Harrison Holgate, and Zech Medley, as well as midfielder Jordan Davies and forward Owen Devonport. Additionally, 30-year-old defender Toby Mullarkey has been made available for transfer after joining from Crawley Town last summer and making 27 appearances in 2025-26.
Amid the roster shake-up, there's a bright spot for the future: the club has triggered an option to retain 20-year-old midfielder George Morrison. These moves reflect Fleetwood's commitment to building a competitive squad while honoring the contributions of those moving on. For fans and followers, it's a time of transition—and a chance to look ahead to what the next campaign will bring.
