Chizzy Iwai looked up during her early morning round at the JM Eagle LA Championship and saw a perfect circle rainbow arching over El Caballero Country Club. It turned out to be a spectacular omen. Just a few hours later, the 23-year-old Japanese star had authored a round of golf just as brilliant, firing a course-record-tying nine-under 63 to seize the early lead.

Iwai's round was a masterclass in scoring. Starting on the back nine, she ignited a stunning run, playing a six-hole stretch in a blistering seven-under par. That surge included five consecutive birdies followed by an eagle on the par-5 16th, powering her to a front-nine 29. After another birdie on her 10th hole, the historic prospect of a sub-60 round—a feat achieved only once on the LPGA Tour—was suddenly in play.

"A little bit thinking 58 or 59 score," Iwai admitted with a smile. "But golf is not easy. That's why I focus on my routine." While the magical 59 remained just out of reach, her 63 matched the low score previously posted at El Caballero by stars like defending champion Ingrid Lindblad and Nasa Hataoka.

The performance is a testament to the vibrant energy Iwai and her twin sister, Akie, have brought to the tour since their rookie season last year. Known for their infectious personalities, the sisters were filmed by the LPGA's social team just a day earlier, racing down the fairway and dancing during a practice round—a joyful spirit that clearly carried into Chizzy's play.

With one LPGA victory already to her name, Iwai's record-tying start positions her perfectly to contend for another title. She credited the peaceful morning conditions and a relaxed mindset for her success, proving that sometimes, all you need is a clear mind, a hot putter, and maybe a little inspiration from a rainbow to shoot the lights out.
