After the Coachella Valley Firebirds won Game 1 of their best-of-five series Wednesday, the Ontario Reign answered back emphatically Friday.

The Coachella Valley Firebirds came into Game 2 riding high after a dominant 3-0 shutout in the series opener, but the Ontario Reign had other plans. In a swift and emphatic response, the Reign evened the best-of-five Calder Cup Playoffs series at 1-1 with a decisive 5-1 victory on Friday night.

The Firebirds struck first, just as they did in Game 1, when Lleyton Roed found the back of the net at the 7:52 mark of the opening period. It looked like Coachella Valley might pick up right where they left off, putting the Reign on their heels once again. But Ontario quickly regrouped, with Logan Brown answering before the first intermission to tie the game at 1-1.

The second period belonged to the Reign. Glenn Gawdin scored to give Ontario a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame, setting the stage for a dramatic third period. Any hopes of a Firebirds comeback were dashed almost immediately, as Cole Guttman scored just 15 seconds into the third period. Francesco Pinelli added a short-handed goal to stretch the lead to 4-1, and Martin Chromiak sealed the win with an empty-net goal as Coachella Valley pulled goalie Nikke Kokko for an extra skater.

Special teams told a key story in this one. The Firebirds went 0-for-5 on the power play, a stark contrast to their success in Game 1. In fact, Coachella Valley is now 3-0 in these playoffs when scoring on the power play and 0-2 when they don't—a stat that will surely be a focus heading into the next game. On the flip side, the Firebirds didn't have to kill a single penalty, but they couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.

Kokko, fresh off a shutout in Game 1, stopped 19 of 23 shots on Friday. Meanwhile, Reign goaltender Pheonix Copley, who replaced starter Erick Portillo, was outstanding with 34 saves on 35 shots to earn the win. Despite the lopsided score, the Firebirds actually outshot Ontario 35-24, and for the series, they've held a 68-47 advantage in shots on goal.

The series now shifts back to Coachella Valley's home ice at Acrisure Arena for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Thursday. The Firebirds have a golden opportunity to close out the series in front of their home fans. If they can't get it done, a decisive Game 5 would send them back to Ontario. The winner of this series will face either the Colorado Eagles or the Henderson Silver Knights in the Pacific Division finals, with a spot in the Western Conference Finals on the line.

For Firebirds fans, this is a test of resilience. The team has shown they can dominate, but now they need to prove they can bounce back. With the series tied 1-1, every shift, every power play, and every save will matter. Gear up in your Firebirds best and get ready for a thrilling showdown at home.
