With 30 days until the FIFA World Cup arrives in the South Bay, celebrations are already underway across the Bay Area, where officials and organizers say the excitement is about more than just soccer.

The FIFA World Cup is coming to the Bay Area, and the excitement is already electric. With just 30 days until the first match kicks off at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, celebrations have officially begun across the region. From San Jose to San Francisco, six World Cup flags were raised on Monday, marking the start of a countdown that promises to be about much more than just soccer.

"It's a way of life, it's a religion, it's not just entertainment," said Aly Wagner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and Bay Area Host Committee member. Wagner, who grew up loving the sport, emphasized the tournament's unique power to unite the world. "There is no event that brings the world together the way a World Cup does," she added.

The Bay Area Host Committee estimates that around 260,000 visitors will travel to the region for the matches. This influx is expected to deliver a major economic boost—between $480 million and $630 million—to local small businesses, hotels, and restaurants. But the impact goes far beyond dollars and cents.

"How many people will fall in love with this beautiful game?" asked Leslie Osborne, a former U.S. Women's National Team player and Bay FC co-founder. "Whether they're at a watch party, at a bar, or at a free clinic hosted by the Bay Area Host Committee, Bay FC, or the Earthquakes—people are going to fall in love with this game, and it's going to unite our community."

For those without match tickets, the excitement doesn't stop. The San Jose Earthquakes are planning the largest free viewing party in the area at San Pedro Square Market, where all 104 matches will be broadcast live over 39 days. It's a chance for everyone to be part of the action, whether you're a lifelong fan or just discovering the sport.

As the countdown continues, the Bay Area is gearing up for a once-in-a-lifetime event that promises to bring people together, boost the local economy, and inspire a new generation of soccer lovers. Get ready—the world is coming to your backyard.
