Fernando Alonso isn’t sure if he’ll stay in F1 beyond 2026, but he already has a few options in mind that could even see him reconnect with some familiar faces from the grid. Now 44, Alonso is nearing the end of his contract with Aston Martin, which runs out at the close of this season.

Fernando Alonso isn't ready to hang up his racing gloves just yet. At 44 years old, the two-time world champion is approaching the final season of his contract with Aston Martin, but he's already plotting his next move—and it might involve some familiar faces from the Formula One grid.

Alonso's current deal with Aston Martin runs through the end of 2026, but the season hasn't exactly been smooth sailing. The team has struggled with reliability issues on their new Honda engine, and Alonso's only finish so far was an 18th-place result in Japan. With the Miami Grand Prix on the horizon, the veteran driver admitted he hasn't yet discussed a contract extension for 2027.

But don't expect Alonso to fade quietly into retirement. He's got his eyes set on some legendary events that could see him reunite with current F1 drivers outside the sport. "If I stop [F1], I can compete in other categories," Alonso told AS. "The Dakar Rally is a possibility. If I can win in endurance racing, F1 and rally-raid, it will probably be unprecedented. So, that's very appealing."

Alonso already has a taste of Dakar, having made a one-off appearance with Toyota in 2020. He's also leaving the door open for another run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he scored back-to-back wins with Toyota in 2018 and 2019. And here's where it gets interesting: Alonso says he's already in talks with current F1 drivers about joining forces at the iconic endurance race. While he hasn't named names, the appeal of Le Mans has always drawn top talent from across the grid.

"I might also return to Le Mans someday, so I'm not too worried about leaving F1," Alonso added. "I'll continue racing and remain connected to this team in the future in a different role." Whether he stays in Formula One or ventures into new territory, one thing is clear—Fernando Alonso's competitive fire is still burning bright, and he's ready to write the next chapter of his legendary career.
