Fernandes: The trophies, the assist record and his future

No Premier League medal, no Champions League title, but Bruno Fernandes has won other trophies and many accolades, and the FWA footballer of the year is on the brink of setting a record.

Bruno Fernandes may not have a Premier League or Champions League medal to his name, but the Manchester United captain is proving that individual brilliance can shine even without team silverware. Since arriving at Old Trafford in 2020, the Portuguese playmaker has lifted domestic cups under Erik ten Hag and is pushing for a top-three finish—something United have only achieved once during his tenure. While that might seem modest for a player many consider the club's best signing since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Fernandes is far from done.

On Friday, Fernandes was named the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year, an accolade that adds to his growing collection of individual honors. But the 28-year-old isn't one to dwell on personal awards. "I don't see it that one player is better than another because he wins more trophies," he said back in October. "I want to be recognised for the good things I did for the club, not just my numbers."

This season, those numbers are speaking loudly. Fernandes is on the verge of history, needing just one more assist to match the Premier League single-season record of 20—a mark shared by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne. He's currently eight assists clear of City's Rayan Cherki in the league standings, with West Ham's Jarrod Bowen trailing in third with 10. The record clearly matters to Fernandes, who has shown a newfound unselfishness in recent matches. One teammate even joked that the old Fernandes might have taken a shot against Brentford rather than setting up striker Benjamin Sesko—a notion the captain quickly dismissed.

Beyond the assist record, Fernandes is the frontrunner for the prestigious PFA Players' Player of the Year award, an honor Henry and De Bruyne each won twice. For a player whose trophy cabinet may lack the biggest prizes, these milestones cement his legacy as one of the Premier League's most creative forces. And with the World Cup on the horizon, Fernandes has plenty more to prove.
