For Brentford Under-18s goalkeeper Felix Lyon, the dream of academy football was always clear, but the path to achieving it was anything but straightforward. Unlike many of his peers who entered the academy system early, Lyon honed his craft the traditional way: on the grassroots pitches of south London.

His football journey began like countless others, playing outfield for Dulwich Village Under-7s simply for the love of the game. But everything changed when he stepped between the posts for local club Ten Em Bee. "That was the team for me," Lyon recalls. "I enjoyed it more in goal. There was a great community around it." This switch wasn't just a positional change; it was finding his calling.

Seeking greater challenges, he progressed to Lewisham Borough, competing in higher divisions against tougher opposition. Alongside his club commitments, his school team became a crucible for success, winning a national title in Year 10—an experience capped by playing at West Bromwich Albion's Hawthorns stadium. "It helped me a lot," Lyon notes, highlighting how these varied environments built a resilient foundation.

Despite the success, the academy dream felt distant for years. "It didn't really become something I thought could happen until my last year of grassroots football," he admits. The breakthrough came from performing for his county, catching the eye of Brentford scouts just as the club was re-establishing its youth setup from U9s to U16s.

His introduction to life at Brentford was a baptism by fire: immediately joining the U18s on a pre-season tour to Germany. "It was clear to me straight away how much of a step up it would be," Lyon says. That intense experience didn't just test his skills; it provided a crucial benchmark, showing him the level of dedication and performance required to thrive at an academy known for its innovative player development. For a young goalkeeper, it was the definitive start of a new, demanding, and exciting chapter.
