After more than two decades on the sideline, a legendary chapter in Texas high school football has come to a close. Averion Hurts Sr., the longtime head coach of Channelview High School and father of Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts, has officially stepped down from his role. The news was first reported by Dave Campbell's Texas Football, marking the end of an era that began back in 2006.
Under Hurts' leadership, the Falcons navigated the ups and downs of Texas football for 20 seasons, posting a record of 74-133 according to MaxPreps. While the wins didn't always pile up, the program's greatest legacy came through the Hurts family itself. Jalen Hurts, who went on to star at Alabama and Oklahoma before becoming an NFL MVP candidate, put up eye-popping numbers in his senior season at Channelview under his father's guidance. That year, he threw for 2,384 yards and 26 touchdowns while rushing for 1,391 yards and 25 more scores.
The Hurts football dynasty doesn't stop there. Averion Hurts Jr., another son, currently serves as the offensive coordinator at Baytown Goose Creek Memorial. Following the news of his father's retirement, Averion Jr. took to social media to share an emotional tribute: "End of an era indeed! It's no question that I chose this profession because of you. 31 years on this planet and every one of them I've witnessed relentless effort and sacrifice. Dad, you are my hero and I will continue to make you proud! Job well done old man!"
The Falcons wrapped up the 2025 season with a 1-9 record and finished ranked No. 590 in the final Texas High School Football Massey Rankings. For fans of Texas high school football, keeping tabs on scores across the Lone Star State is easier than ever with real-time updates and final scores available through comprehensive resources.
As one door closes for the Hurts family at Channelview, the impact of Averion Hurts Sr. on Texas football—and on the game's brightest stars—will not be forgotten.
