The stakes couldn't be higher for Florida A&M softball. After falling short in their bid for a first-ever Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament title on Friday, the Rattlers have one more shot at glory—a do-or-die championship rematch against Southern on Saturday.
Friday's game was a tough one for FAMU (31-20), as they were routed 8-0 in just five innings by the Southern Jaguars (37-14) at Gulfport Sportsplex. The Rattlers managed only one hit compared to Southern's 12, and five defensive errors compounded the struggle.
But in the SWAC's double-elimination format, a single loss doesn't end the dream. The Rattlers had previously handed Southern its own loss on May 6, winning a thrilling 5-4 contest in 11 innings. Now, the two teams meet again on Saturday at noon, with everything on the line in a winner-takes-all final.
A win would not only secure FAMU's first SWAC softball championship but also earn them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament—a stage the Rattlers haven't graced since 2017, when they were still members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
For fans eager to catch the action, the championship game will stream live on the free SWAC TV app. It's a moment that defines a season: one game, one champion, and a ticket to the big dance. The Rattlers have already shown they can beat Southern when it counts—now they'll need to do it again.
