This battle began in earnest when Joey Aguilar's appeal for an extra year of eligibility was denied in a Knoxville courtroom. Heupel explored the transfer portal for solutions but was ultimately priced out, leaving the Vols with a genuine quarterback competition for the first time in several seasons.

Initially, sophomore George MacIntyre—a former 5-star recruit entering his second year in the program—was the presumed frontrunner. But early reports from spring camp suggested that Brandon, a 5-star passer from North Carolina, was already closing the gap. As practices progressed, the chatter grew louder. Rumored scrimmage performances and practice highlights painted Brandon as a legitimate contender, and by the end of camp, many close to the program considered him the new favorite.

"For a true freshman getting here in January, seven weeks of offseason, what we did, and then hitting the ground in spring ball, through today, he's been really sound in what he's done—I think in the pass game, certainly," Heupel said during the spring. "There's a lot on our quarterbacks in the run game, too, and that's an area that, at times, can be the hardest part for our quarterbacks. But he's continued to progress in that."
