Fabio Quartararo has been open about his mindset shift as his winless drought with Yamaha approaches four years. The 2021 MotoGP champion, who hasn't tasted victory since the 2022 German GP, is now riding "for himself" rather than for the team.
Speaking to MotoGP's official YouTube channel, the French rider explained his evolving perspective: "I'm getting older and I'm leaning into that side of my brain. When you're winning, everything is easy. But when you're struggling, that's where you face tough times. I have nothing to prove. If I'm here, it's just because I want to be back for myself."
Quartararo's frustration with Yamaha has been building for years. Despite managing five pole positions in 2025, the new V4 engine hasn't delivered the improvements needed. The bike continues to struggle with grip and front-end feel—issues the champion raised months ago. His best finish this season? A disappointing 14th place.
The turning point came when Quartararo reportedly agreed to join Honda for the 2027 season, committing before even testing Yamaha's 2026 machine. Since then, his criticism of the Japanese manufacturer has only intensified, and his motivation within the team appears to be at an all-time low.
"When you taste the feeling of winning, you don't want to lose it," Quartararo added, reflecting on his championship pedigree. "I know my speed. I know what I've achieved. I know what I want to achieve in the near future."
For riders and fans alike, this serves as a reminder that even champions face uphill battles when the machinery doesn't match their talent. As Quartararo looks ahead to a fresh start with Honda, his focus remains clear: getting back to the front, on his own terms.
