Former Oklahoma City Thunder star Desmond Mason is facing serious legal trouble after allegations that he defrauded a Texas couple out of thousands of dollars in a sports memorabilia deal gone wrong. The 48-year-old former NBA player was arrested in Oklahoma City on Thursday, May 7, on a felony theft warrant issued in Collin County, Texas.

According to police reports, the trouble began in March 2025 when a Texas couple commissioned Mason to frame a valuable piece of sports memorabilia. They paid him a total of $9,822.86 for the work. While Mason reportedly sent a photo of the finished product in April 2025 and promised delivery, communication came to an abrupt halt shortly after. The couple never received their item, leading to a warrant for Mason's arrest in January 2026.

Currently being held without bond at the Oklahoma City Detention Center, Mason faces additional allegations closer to home. A Tulsa businessman named Travers Mahan III has filed a similar complaint, claiming Mason took $37,500 for custom artwork featuring jerseys from NBA legends like Michael Jordan, Steph Curry, and Russell Westbrook—but never delivered the pieces.

Court documents reveal that the estimated value of Mahan's undelivered artwork reaches $52,500. In his legal filing, Mahan is seeking $57,500 in compensation, plus interest, attorney fees, and sole possession of any completed artwork. Mason was scheduled to appear in Tulsa District Court on Monday, May 11, but that hearing was rescheduled just one day after his Oklahoma City arrest.

For basketball fans and collectors, this case serves as a stark reminder about the importance of verifying credentials and using secure transactions when dealing with high-value memorabilia. Mason, a Texas native who played college ball at Oklahoma State University before being drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2000, was a fan favorite during his time with the Thunder. Now, his legacy is overshadowed by allegations that strike at the heart of the sports collectibles community.
