Wyc Grousbeck is trading parquet for turf. After more than two decades as the majority owner of the Boston Celtics—a tenure that brought two NBA championships to Beantown—Grousbeck is reportedly making a bold move into the NFL.
According to a report from Sportico, Grousbeck and Celtics investor Aditya Mittal are leading a bid to purchase the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning Super Bowl champions who defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX just this past February. Mittal, a member of one of India's wealthiest families, previously contributed roughly $1 billion when a group led by Bill Chisholm bought the Celtics from Grousbeck for $6.1 billion last summer.
Now, the duo is setting their sights on the Pacific Northwest. Per Sportico, Grousbeck and Mittal were the only signatures on the letter of interest submitted to Allen & Company, the firm handling the sale. Since Mittal resides in London, Grousbeck would split his time between Boston and Seattle, essentially running the franchise day-to-day.
But they won't be the only ones in the huddle. Sportico also reports that Vinod Khosla, a prominent West Coast venture capitalist and investor in the San Francisco 49ers, is preparing his own bid for the Seahawks.
For Grousbeck, this would mark a major pivot from the hardwood to the gridiron—and a chance to add a Lombardi Trophy to a résumé already gleaming with Larry O'Brien hardware. Whether he can outmaneuver the competition and bring his championship pedigree to the NFL remains to be seen, but the opening kickoff of this bidding war has officially begun.
