Here's everything Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said following the first day of rookie minicamp, including overall takeaways.

The Houston Texans kicked off their rookie minicamp with a blend of energy and purpose, and head coach DeMeco Ryans was all smiles after the first day on the grass. For Ryans, this weekend isn't just about getting the new faces acclimated—it's about laying the foundation for a winning culture in Houston.

"Today, we were excited to start our first day of rookie minicamp, for coaches and for the players," Ryans said. "It’s our first opportunity to get the guys on the grass. We had a lot of meetings last night. You’re trying to see who can take the meetings to the field and how quickly these guys learn."

The early returns were promising. Ryans praised his rookie class for their attentiveness and enthusiasm in the meeting room, noting that they were loud, engaged, and quick to give feedback. But minicamp isn't just about the players—it's also a development opportunity for the coaching staff. "Some of our younger coaches are also handling some of the meetings," Ryans added. "Rookie minicamp is not only a place where we are developing our players, but also our assistant coaches get a chance to help out and coach some drills and handle some meetings. It’s been a really great start to the weekend."

When asked about the additions of defensive tackle Kayden McDonald and linebacker Aiden Fisher, Ryans emphasized that the team's identity is already firmly in place. "Our culture here is set. I don’t have to say much on it, but I still have to make sure I teach our rookies what that looks like," he explained. "A lot of guys are coming from a lot of different places all over the country, a lot of different schools that do things a lot of different ways. We’re just going to have to let them know how we do it here in Houston."

Ryans highlighted the high-character nature of this year's draft class, starting with offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge. "A really great guy, loves football. He’s ready to put on pads today, so I had to slow him down," Ryans said with a grin. "It’s exciting to work with these guys, exciting to see them. My main message for these guys: it’s not about coming out and being perfect right away. It’s about learning how we do things here and building on that."

As the Texans look ahead to OTAs, the emphasis is clear: absorb the system, embrace the culture, and grow together. With a mix of hungry rookies and a coaching staff that's just as eager to develop, the energy in Houston is palpable. For fans, this minicamp is the first glimpse of what could be a special foundation for the future.
