Bath are looking to "create their own legacy" as they face Bordeaux Begles in the European Champions Cup semi-final, their first for 20 years.

Twenty years. That's how long it's been since Bath Rugby last tasted the electric atmosphere of a European Champions Cup semi-final. Now, under the steady hand of head coach Johann van Graan, this resurgent squad is ready to write their own chapter. "Every team has weaknesses," van Graan says, acknowledging the monumental challenge that awaits them this Sunday against the reigning champions, Bordeaux Begles.

Let's be honest—a trip to Bordeaux is one of the toughest tickets in rugby. The French side boasts a galaxy of stars like Matthieu Jalibert, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, and Damian Penaud. They're the defending title holders, and a French club has won the Champions Cup for five straight years. They even brushed aside powerhouse Toulouse to reach this stage. To make matters tougher, the semi-final is being played right in their backyard, just down the road from their home stadium.

But here's the thing about this Bath team: they don't flinch. Over the past three seasons, van Graan has built a culture of calm under pressure. It's a mindset that prop Beno Obano sees every day in training. "Before Johann came, someone showed us a clip of Saracens after the European final, talking about how calm they were," Obano recalls. "I feel like this group feels that way now. Shout out to Johann—he's done that with this group. In these big games, we're just so calm. Everything we need is in the team, everything we need is in the circle. It's empowering."

That composure isn't just talk. Bath have walked the walk. Last season, they brought silverware back to a rugby-mad city by winning three finals: the Premiership, the European Challenge Cup, and the Prem Rugby Cup. That experience has lifted a long-standing monkey off the club's back. They know how to close out big moments.

And they have the firepower to match Bordeaux. World-class talents like Scotland fly-half Finn Russell, England centre Ollie Lawrence, Argentina back Santiago Carreras, and South Africa prop Thomas du Toit give Bath a lineup that can go toe-to-toe with anyone. While Bordeaux have stumbled in the Top 14 this season—losing 10 of 22 games and sitting sixth, 17 points behind leaders Toulouse—Bath have built momentum when it matters most.

So as the team prepares for their first European semi-final in two decades, the message is clear. "We've played in those games," Obano says. "Whatever happens, wherever the chips may fall, we'll be calm and composed. We'll land on what we have to do quite nicely." For Bath fans, that's the kind of legacy worth waiting 20 years for.
