After last week's heartbreaking DFB Pokal exit at the hands of Stuttgart, Freiburg's hopes for silverware this season now rest squarely on their Europa League campaign. The German side traveled to northern Portugal to face Braga, the 2011 finalists, aiming to bring back a favorable result for next week's decisive second leg in Germany.
Still smarting from a heavy weekend defeat at the Westfalenstadion, manager Julian Schuster rang the changes for this crucial European tie. In came Suzuki, Manzambi, Ginter, Makengo, Treu, and Beste, replacing Höfler, Ogbus, Höler, Günter, Kübler, and Scherhant in a bold tactical reshuffle.
The visitors found themselves on the back foot almost immediately, conceding inside the first eight minutes. A headed clearance from Jordy Makengo fell kindly to Braga full-back Víctor Gómez, whose perfectly weighted pass found Demir Ege Tıknaz. The Turkish international made no mistake, calmly slotting past Noah Atubolu to give the home side an early advantage.
But Freiburg showed their resilience, leveling the score just past the quarter-hour mark. In a moment of controversy, referee Anthony Taylor waved play on after a heavy challenge on Igor Matanović as Jan-Niklas Beste and Vincenzo Grifo raced toward goal. Beste kept his composure, squaring to his captain who coolly slid the ball under the onrushing Lukáš Horníček.
The remainder of the first half was a tactical chess match, with both sides creating little. Freiburg managed only a speculative long-range effort, while Braga were similarly contained. That was until the dying moments before halftime, when a VAR check awarded the home side a penalty after Philipp Lienhart was judged to have fouled Gustaf Lagerbielke in the box. Rodrigo Zalazar stepped up with confidence, but Noah Atubolu produced a stunning save to keep the scores level heading into the break.
The second half saw Freiburg grow into the game, creating several promising chances they failed to convert. Johan Manzambi and his teammates pushed forward with increasing urgency, but a combination of poor finishing and resolute Braga defending kept the scoreline level. As the clock ticked down, the German side will rue those missed opportunities that could have given them a vital advantage to take back to the Europa-Park Stadion.
