The future is bright for the Essex Rebels women's basketball team—even if their championship dreams were put on hold this season. Captain Claire Paxton remains optimistic after the team's semi-final exit, believing the foundation is set for even greater success ahead.
After a stellar regular season that saw the Rebels secure a franchise-best third-place finish, the squad faced a grueling 800-mile round trip to take on the Caledonia Gladiators in the Super League Basketball semi-finals. The journey proved costly, as the Gladiators triumphed 80-58 on Sunday, advancing to face the Sheffield Hatters in the final.
"They're a tough opponent, and it just wasn't to be for us on the day," Paxton told BBC Essex. "Eight or nine hours on a bus, and then to be met by them—it was a tough situation to play in. If we had finished second and met them at home in the semi-final, it might have been a different story."
Despite the disappointment, the season was packed with milestones. The Rebels boasted a perfect home record at the University of Essex, and their quarter-final victory over the London Lions—a dominant 93-72 win—marked the first time the program had advanced beyond that stage. "That was definitely a standout performance for us," Paxton said. "We'd never made it out of the quarter-finals before."
Head coach Ashley Cookson, now in his third season, has been instrumental in the team's evolution. "I think it takes a few seasons to grow and understand the whole system we're trying to play," Paxton explained. "This year was the perfect group of people to put that into fruition. We moulded together very well, and we complemented each other perfectly on the court."
The Rebels joined the SLB in 2018-19 and reached their first major final two years ago, falling to the Lions in the Betty Codona Trophy. Now, with momentum building, the focus shifts to next season—though roster decisions loom. "There's a couple of weeks of decompression and letting the emotions settle before people start making decisions about what happens next," Paxton noted. "We had a very deep roster this season, and the pieces were definitely there to make a final. We just need to keep growing."
For a program on the rise, the message is clear: the Rebels are just getting started.
