Despite a masterful rearguard innings from Sam Hain, Essex maintained their grip on their County Championship clash with Warwickshire after another rain-disrupted day at Edgbaston.
Warwickshire, resuming at a precarious 113-7, were hauled to 190 all out thanks almost single-handedly to Hain, who finished unbeaten on 88 from 179 balls. His intelligent batting, which included two sixes, shepherded the tail and denied Essex a quick finish, with the final wicket partnership adding a crucial 45 runs.
Essex's seam attack shared the spoils, with Jamie Porter leading the way with 4-59, well-supported by Sam Cook, Shane Snater, and Zaman Akhter.
In reply, Essex's top order stuttered early, falling to 19-2 against the probing seam of Ethan Bamber and Keith Barker. However, Paul Walter (46) and Charlie Allison (40 not out) steadied the ship with a patient 84-run partnership, showcasing the discipline required in first-class cricket. Walter fell late in the day, leaving Essex on 110-3 at the close, still 80 runs behind.
With over 80 overs lost to weather across the first two days, the match remains intriguingly poised. Essex will look to build a significant first-innings lead, while Warwickshire will rely on their bowlers to exploit any remaining moisture in the pitch. If the rain stays away, the stage is set for a compelling battle over the final two days.
