When you lose two first-round NFL Draft picks from your defensive line, most programs would brace for a rebuilding year. But the Miami Hurricanes might just have the perfect understudy waiting in the wings.

Last season, Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor formed one of the most dominant defensive end duos in college football. Their relentless pressure off the edge powered a physical, swarming Miami defense that carried the program to its first national championship game appearance in over two decades. Now both are preparing for their rookie NFL seasons after being selected in the first round of last month's draft.

That leaves a massive void on the defensive line heading into the 2026 season. But according to ESPN analyst Andrea Adelson, the Hurricanes may already have their next star waiting in the shadows.

ESPN recently named defensive end Hayden Lowe as Miami's under-the-radar player to watch. Lowe arrived in Coral Gables last year as a five-star prospect from Oaks Christian School in Los Angeles, and coaches quickly noticed something special. Within weeks of his first practices, they believed he could make an immediate impact. Then injury struck, sidelining him for the entire season.

Instead of a lost year, Lowe turned it into a masterclass. He spent every game watching and learning from Bain and Mesidor, absorbing the techniques and mindset that made them elite. Now, with both stars gone and only transfer Damon Wilson II providing proven depth, the opportunity is wide open.

"My expectations for him are through the roof," head coach Mario Cristobal said, and the numbers back up the hype. Lowe was ranked as the No. 4 edge rusher nationally by On3 Sports and the No. 2 edge rusher by 247 Sports. His high school career stats tell the story of a game-wrecker: 159 tackles, 42 tackles for loss, 24.5 sacks, 29 quarterback hurries, two interceptions, and five forced fumbles.

If Lowe can stay healthy and translate that potential to the college stage, Miami's defensive line might not miss a beat. An encore to the 2025 season? Don't count it out.
