Can UNC return to its winning ways on the football field? ESPN has low hopes for the Tar Heels in 2026;

The buzz around Chapel Hill is quiet this preseason, but expectations are quietly simmering for UNC's 2026 football campaign, especially with Bill Belichick still at the helm. After a rollercoaster 2025 season, the Tar Heels are undergoing yet another roster transformation, and ESPN's latest offseason rankings paint a grim picture for their immediate future.

North Carolina landed 15th out of 17 ACC teams in ESPN's Power Four offseason rankings, finishing ahead of only Boston College and Stanford. It's a sobering outlook for a program that's hoping to bounce back from a lackluster 2025 season, but there are glimmers of hope amidst the uncertainty.

The Tar Heels lost significant defensive talent through the transfer portal, most notably standout Tyler Thompson, but they've also added some intriguing pieces. On offense, UNC will start a new quarterback for the third straight season, with Taron Dickens and Billy Edwards expected to battle for QB1. To fix their struggling attack, the Tar Heels made a splash by hiring Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator. While Arkansas had its ups and downs under Petrino in 2025, his high-octane system still moved the ball effectively. As ESPN noted, "Petrino made for a gasp-inducing hire, but the 65-year-old coordinator knows how to move the football and has built a career on turning around offenses quickly."

ESPN highlighted several key transfer additions, including Edwards, wide receiver Trech Kekahuna, and tight end Jordan Washington. The Tar Heels' top incoming recruits are quarterback Travis Burgess, plus wide receivers Keeyun Chapman and C.J. Sadler. On the retention front, UNC managed to hold onto leading rusher Demon June, breakout wide receiver Jordan Shipp, and star edge rusher Melkart Abou Jaoude—a solid core to build around.

Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi bet on potential over past production in the portal, adding Kekahuna (a Wisconsin transfer) and four new faces to an overhauled offensive line. On defense, Richmond transfer defenders Donovan Hoilette and Peyton Seelmann—both All-Patriot League selections last fall—bring proven experience to a unit that needs it. UNC's early investment in high school recruiting under Belichick also paid off, landing ESPN's No. 14 recruiting class.

While the 2026 outlook may be bleak according to ESPN, the Tar Heels have the pieces—and the leadership—to surprise. For fans eyeing the next step, keep an eye on that quarterback battle and Petrino's offense; it could be the spark Chapel Hill needs to turn those rankings around.
