ESPN has released its preseason top 50 WNBA player rankings ahead of the league's 30th regular season tipping off on May 7, and one of the biggest storylines is Caitlin Clark's drop from No. 4 last year to No. 10 this year.
After an injury-riddled 2025 campaign that limited her to just 13 games, the superstar guard slid down the list—a move that has raised eyebrows given her undeniable talent and global star power. Despite the setback, Clark was still named an All-Star in 2025, proving her impact even when not at full strength.
For context, Clark is now ranked behind a Who's Who of WNBA elite: A'ja Wilson, Alyssa Thomas, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Jackie Young, Sabrina Ionescu, Allisha Gray, Paige Bueckers, and Kelsey Plum. It's a crowded top tier, but many fans expected the Iowa legend to hold a higher spot.
ESPN's Kareem Copeland explained the reasoning, noting Clark's historic rookie season in 2024—where she set a single-season assists record and finished second in 3-point field goals—before injuries slowed her momentum. "She became one of the league's best passers and long-range shooters the moment she stepped onto a WNBA court," Copeland wrote, adding that she was named Rookie of the Year and first-team All-WNBA in 2024.
Now, with a clean bill of health and a chip on her shoulder, Clark will look to prove the rankings wrong when the Indiana Fever open the 2026 season on Saturday, May 9 against the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It's a nationally televised matchup on ION, and all eyes will be on Clark to see if she can climb back up the rankings where many believe she belongs.
