The Miami Heat's season came to a heartbreaking end Tuesday night in a 127-126 overtime loss to the Charlotte Hornets in the Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament. The defeat was made even more painful as the Heat were forced to play the majority of the game without their All-Star center, Bam Adebayo.
Adebayo exited the game in the second quarter after just 11 minutes of action, suffering a lower back injury on a controversial play involving Hornets star LaMelo Ball. After having a shot blocked, Ball fell to the floor and appeared to pull Adebayo down with him, causing the Heat big man to land hard on his tailbone.
Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra did not mince words after the game, expressing clear frustration over the incident and the lack of an ejection. "I don't think it's cute. I don't think it's funny," Spoelstra stated. "I think it's a stupid play. It's a dangerous play... He should've been thrown out of the game for that."
Ball offered a different perspective in his post-game comments, attributing the action to being disoriented after taking contact. "I apologize on that one. I got hit on the head and didn't really know where I was," Ball said, adding that he planned to check on Adebayo's condition.
Despite playing shorthanded, the Heat pushed the game to overtime, but Ball ultimately sealed the win for Charlotte with a game-winning layup with five seconds remaining. The Hornets now advance to face the loser of the 7 vs. 8 Play-In game, while the Heat's campaign is over. The league office will likely review the play involving Ball and Adebayo for potential supplemental discipline.
