In a breathtaking display of tactical brilliance and raw speed, Ireland's Mark English stormed to victory in the men's 800m at the Diamond League Shanghai, delivering a race that will be remembered as one of the season's finest moments. The 33-year-old from Donegal produced a devastating final surge, weaving past four rivals in the last 10 meters to claim the win in a meet record time of 1:43.85 at China's Textile City Sports Centre.
English's performance was nothing short of spectacular. Trailing much of the race while hugging the inside lane, he saved his best for the home straight, unleashing a sprint finish that left his competitors stunned. Botswana's Kethobogile Haingura was edged into second (1:43.89), while American Brandon Miller took third (1:44.00). Britain's Ben Pattison, still finding his form after an injury-disrupted 2025, finished sixth in 1:44.19.
This victory marks a historic milestone: English becomes the first Irish male athlete to win a Diamond League event, joining compatriots Ciara Mageean, Rhasidat Adeleke, and Sarah Healy in the elite winners' circle. The $20,000 (£14,800) first prize was a fitting reward for a runner who has been building momentum all season.
"It felt great," English said after the race, reflecting on his win against a world-class field. "I wasn't really thinking about the time. I'm delighted to get the win and to beat those guys in a sprint finish. There were parts of that race where I thought they were getting away from me. It was just a matter of hanging on, and thankfully I had enough left in that last 50 meters."
English's victory caps an impressive winter campaign. In January, he shattered his own Irish indoor 600m record with a time of 1:15.80, becoming the first Irish man to break 1:16 in the event. He followed that up in February with a new Irish indoor 800m record of 1:44.23. A two-time European Championships bronze medalist, English has also collected one silver and two bronze medals at European Indoor Championships, cementing his reputation as one of Ireland's finest middle-distance runners.
In other Diamond League action, British shot putter Lawrence Okoye finished fourth with a final-round throw of 66.03m, while sprinter Amy Hunt clocked a season's best 22.48 in the women's 200m, placing fifth behind Jamaican star Shericka Jackson (22.07).
