Durham head coach Ryan Campbell is confident that England are getting Emilio Gay at the "peak of his power" as the opener prepares for a potential Test debut next month. The 26-year-old left-hander has been named in England's Test squad for the first time and is in line to partner Ben Duckett at the top of the order when the first Test against New Zealand begins at Lord's on June 4.
Gay has been in sensational form this season, amassing 552 runs in just eight innings, including three centuries. His standout performances include a match-winning 159 not out against Lancashire, as well as scores of 129 and 128. This blistering run of form has catapulted him into international contention, especially with established opener Zak Crawley struggling for runs at Kent.
"Emilio is at the peak of his power right now," Campbell told BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. "If you're ever going to succeed or pick a guy on the way up, England have done that by selecting him."
Gay first caught the selectors' attention during the England Lions tour to Australia last winter, and his work ethic has been a key factor in his rise. Although he has primarily batted at number three for Durham this season, Gay is an opener by trade, making him a natural fit for the role. Campbell believes fans will be impressed by what they see from the former Northants player.
"What you are going to get is a traditional, stylish opening batter," said the Australian coach. "Everyone has different ways to look at their game nowadays. Some are quite brutal when they come to hitting fours and sixes. Whereas as a left-hander, when you watch Emilio bat, it won't take long if he gets a couple of cover drives away, you'll think this kid's got something about him. He's very stylish, elegant and hopefully he'll get the job done."
For England, Gay's inclusion signals a fresh approach at the top of the order, blending youthful promise with proven domestic form. If he can translate his county success to the international stage, fans could be witnessing the start of an exciting new chapter in English cricket.
