Neil Hodgson believes Marquez’s retirement could mirror Cantona’s decisionNeil Hodgson believes it wouldn’t be a shock if Marc Marquez steps away from MotoGP in 2026, drawing a parallel with Eric Cantona’s decision to walk away from football when he felt the time was right. Marquez is still under contract with Ducati through the end of the season, but his ongoing struggles with the GP26 and lingering effects from a shoulder injury have kept questions about his future front and centre.

The MotoGP world is buzzing with speculation that could signal the end of an era. Former champion Neil Hodgson has issued a striking warning: Marc Marquez might be forced into retirement as early as 2026, drawing a compelling parallel to football legend Eric Cantona's abrupt exit at his peak.

Marquez remains under contract with Ducati through the end of this season, but his future has never been more uncertain. The eight-time world champion is grappling with a persistent shoulder injury and struggling to adapt to the GP26, leaving fans and pundits questioning what comes next.

The trouble began at the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix, where Marquez suffered a coracoid fracture and ligament damage in his right shoulder. Despite undergoing surgery last October, he still hasn't returned to full fitness seven months later. The injury has robbed him of his natural riding style, and the results tell a sobering story.

This season has been uncharacteristically rocky for the Spaniard. He retired from the Thailand Grand Prix due to a puncture, managed only a fourth-place finish in Brazil, and settled for fifth in the US. His most painful moment came at Jerez, where he crashed on Lap 2 while running in second place—denying what could have been his best finish of the year.

Hodgson, a former World Superbike champion, has noticed a worrying trend. "There's no denying that Marc Marquez has struggled this season," he told TNT Sports. "What we don't know yet is if he's battling through that injury still, and he'll come out just as competitive as he was. For now, he's making mistakes at critical points of races in a way he has not done since 2015."

The comparison to Cantona is particularly telling. "Over the years, he's been a hugely honest rider when interviewed. He's made it clear that if his season is just third and fourth place, it holds no interest for him," Hodgson explained. "It's like Eric Cantona. When he retired, he was still better than most. But he wasn't happy with his standards, so he packed up. If the season continues like this, it would be no surprise if he walked away at the end of the year."

For fans of the sport—and especially those who wear the iconic red of Marquez's gear—this uncertainty is hard to digest. Will the legend rediscover his edge, or are we witnessing the final chapters of a remarkable career? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: Marquez's fighting spirit is being tested like never before.
