Emma Raducanu's return to the court has hit another snag. The British tennis star has withdrawn from the 2026 Italian Open due to illness, extending an already lengthy layoff. It's now been 59 days since she last competed at Indian Wells, and fans were hoping Rome would mark her comeback.
Raducanu had already completed her media duties before the withdrawal, giving Sky Sports a candid fitness update that now feels bittersweet. "I think it's been a long few weeks since I last competed," she shared. "I've made good progress, I've made good gains in the last few weeks, and I'm really feeling positive about where I'm headed, how I'm playing and what I'm doing on the court each day, and I feel motivated and I feel good to go."
She added with noticeable optimism: "That's a real win for me, and I'm just enjoying every day that I'm putting out."
The 2021 US Open champion spoke about rediscovering her drive during training. "I think I've found a spark in the last few weeks since I've started training again," she said. "I feel a big difference in how much energy I'm putting into it. So yeah, very motivated for what's ahead."
When asked if that spark had dimmed during her time away, Raducanu was honest: "I would say it's more difficult when you're week to week to maintain it. If you're not necessarily playing well, then it's hard to stay motivated. But after my training block these past few weeks, things are starting to look up."
This latest setback means Raducanu has missed a significant chunk of the clay-court season. While her peers have already settled into the surface and claimed titles, she's left playing catch-up. Even her most loyal supporters might find it tough to back her for a deep run at Roland Garros this year.
But there's always a path forward. Raducanu could choose to skip the rest of the clay swing, focus on full recovery, and aim for a stronger return during the grass-court season. With Wimbledon on the horizon, a healthy Raducanu backed by a home crowd could be exactly the spark she needs to turn this season around.
