The Manitoba Moose's remarkable postseason journey came to a heartbreaking end Friday night, falling 5-2 to the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena in Michigan. It was a bitter finish for a team that had already defied expectations, making its deepest playoff run since 2018.
After capturing a tense 1-0 victory in Game 1 against the league's second-best team, the Moose couldn't sustain that momentum. The Griffins' lethal power play proved to be the difference-maker, converting on three of four opportunities in the decisive Game 4. Grand Rapids finished the series winning three straight games, ending Manitoba's Cinderella story.
Dylan Anhorn opened the scoring for the Moose, and Phil Di Giuseppe added a late third-period tally, but it wasn't enough against a Griffins squad that controlled the pace from the opening faceoff. Goaltender Thomas Milic made 21 saves on 25 shots, but the Moose couldn't contain Grand Rapids' offensive firepower, led by Carter Mazur's two goals and an assist.
Despite the loss, there were bright spots for Manitoba. David Gustafsson and Brayden Yager tied for the team lead with four points each in the playoffs, while 12 different players contributed offensively across seven postseason games—a testament to the team's depth and resilience.
"Very proud of this group," said defenceman Ashton Sautner, reflecting on the season. "We've been through a lot this year, didn't matter if we were going through highs or lows. This group of guys was special and made it a lot of fun coming to the rink, but it's not easy losing."
The Griffins now advance to face the Chicago Wolves in the Central Division Final, while the Moose head home for the summer. Training camp is set to open in late September, following the first few Winnipeg Jets skates—giving fans plenty of time to dream about what this young core can achieve next season.
