Eli Stowers has no doubt about identity with Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Eli Stowers doesn't just view himself as a pass-catcher in the NFL and he's working to make sure he can prove that's the case.

When the Philadelphia Eagles used a second-round pick on Eli Stowers in the 2026 NFL Draft, the whispers started almost immediately. Is he a tight end, or just a big slot receiver in disguise?

It's a fair question. Over his final two seasons at Vanderbilt, Stowers was an absolute force in the passing game, racking up back-to-back 600-yard campaigns and exploding for 769 yards in his senior year. For a tight end, those are eye-popping numbers. But there's a catch: in college, he wasn't asked to do the dirty work very often. He wasn't lined up on the edge, burying his shoulder into a defensive end on run plays.

That lack of blocking reps created a cloud of doubt. Can he hold his own in the NFL trenches? Or is he destined to be a glorified receiver who can't stay on the field in critical situations?

Stowers isn't interested in labels. He's interested in proving people wrong.

At rookie minicamp last week, the rookie didn't shy away from the challenge. He spent extra time working on his blocking technique, focusing on the fundamentals that separate a weapon from a complete tight end.

"You just have to learn the technique," Stowers told reporters. "I think that was not necessarily a hurdle, but the thing you have to learn the most. You have to get the technique down. A lot of it is reps and so you get the muscle memory down. And the other side of it is just the will to want to block."

That "will" is exactly what Eagles fans love to hear. In Philadelphia, tight ends aren't just pass-catchers—they're an extension of the offensive line. And Stowers is embracing that identity fully.

"I view myself as a tight end, but I think I can be a really good weapon in the passing game as well," he said. "I'm thankful that I'm viewed that way because it shows that people think I'm explosive enough to view me as a receiver. But the fact is that I'm a tight end, and I want to be used that way in the offense."

The Eagles have already made their stance clear: Stowers is officially listed as a tight end on the roster, and he's been practicing exclusively with the tight end group. Sure, he'll still line up in the slot from time to time—that's where his explosiveness shines. But if he can prove he's a reliable in-line blocker, he'll see the field a lot sooner than some expect.

For a team that loves versatile, physical playmakers, Stowers might just be the perfect fit. He knows who he is. Now he just has to show the NFL what that means.
