After a grueling stretch at Indian Wells and the Miami Open, World No. 4 Elena Rybakina made a strategic decision to prioritize recovery, opting for a longer-than-usual break before the clay court swing. This meant a 20-day gap between tournaments and, notably, her absence from Kazakhstan's crucial Billie Jean King Cup tie against Canada.
Returning to action at the Stuttgart Open with a decisive win over Diana Schnaider, Rybakina opened up about her choice. "I needed some time to rest, to prepare my body for this clay court season," she explained. "I was of course tired, and there are some things which in the body start hurting, so you need to really take care."
Her decision, made in consultation with her team and the national federation, paid off for all parties. While she focused on recuperation, her Kazakh teammates stepped up brilliantly, securing a 3-1 victory over Canada to qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup finals in Seville this November.
Rybakina's disciplined approach to scheduling seems to be a key part of her formidable 2024 campaign. She boasts an impressive 22-5 record this season, with her only loss to a player outside the top 20 coming against Antonia Ruzic—a testament to her remarkable consistency against the tour's elite.
Now, with her body refreshed, the powerful baseliner looks to translate her hard-court momentum onto the clay, starting her Stuttgart campaign strong as she builds towards the ultimate goal at Roland Garros.
