Seven-year stay with the Mustangs comes to an end. Jets have won 50 games in past two seasons.

After seven seasons at the helm of Edgewood's boys basketball program, head coach Matt Wadsworth is moving on to take over the Hauser Jets—a Class 1A powerhouse coming off its best two-year stretch since winning the state championship in 2006. Hauser athletic director Kyle Shipp confirmed the hire on Monday, marking a new chapter for Wadsworth and a significant transition for both programs.

Wadsworth's tenure with the Mustangs was one of steady growth and resilience. Over seven seasons, he posted an 88-87 record, including four winning seasons and never finishing below 10 wins. His career record now stands at 229-215, with previous stops at Riverton Parke (one year), North Posey (four seasons), and Whiteland (seven seasons).

Beyond the win-loss column, Wadsworth's impact on Edgewood's basketball culture was profound. He stepped into the role during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when the school's youth program was struggling. He didn't just coach the varsity team—he invested heavily in building the foundation for the future. "Matt got involved and helped stabilize our youth program, knowing they would become our athletes," said Edgewood athletic director Jerry Bland. "He stayed active and helped build the junior high program and provided some travel opportunities our kids may not have gotten. Matt made sure those opportunities were out there and available."

Ironically, much of that groundwork will benefit his successor, as the players Wadsworth helped develop are just now reaching the high school level. He also oversaw the opening of Edgewood's new fieldhouse this winter, a facility that will serve as a lasting legacy of his time with the Mustangs.

Now, Wadsworth steps into a program with championship aspirations. Hauser has won 50 games over the past two seasons under former coach Trent Moorhead (79-27), who left after four years to take the reins at Center Grove. Moorhead led the Jets to back-to-back semi-state appearances, where they fell to the eventual state champions by narrow margins. In a twist of fate, Moorhead's brother, Brad—now head coach at South Ripley—previously served as an assistant under Wadsworth at Edgewood. Meanwhile, the coaching carousel continues: Whiteland's current head coach, Nate Cangany, was hired out of Hauser to replace Wadsworth in 2019.

For Edgewood, the search for a new head coach begins immediately. With summer activities approaching, the administration is moving deliberately to find the right fit. As of Monday afternoon, the school had not yet received Wadsworth's official letter of resignation, but the process is underway. The Mustangs know they have big shoes to fill—but thanks to Wadsworth's groundwork, the next coach will inherit a program that's ready to compete.
