In a move that feels like destiny fulfilled, Charlee Hobbs has returned to her roots. The Fairview volleyball program—where she once dominated as the Eagles' all-time kills leader—has named her its new head coach. It's a homecoming that was written in the stars, or rather, in a high school mock interview.
"I remember during my senior year, sitting with our superintendent and school officials," Hobbs recalls. "I told them my five-year plan was to be back in Westwood, coaching right here at Fairview. Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to come back."
And she's right on schedule. After graduating, Hobbs took her talents to UVA-Wise, where she earned a degree in Business Administration while continuing to play the sport she loves. But her heart never left Westwood. Now, she's ready to give back to the game that shaped her.
"Volleyball has given me so much—discipline, confidence, lifelong friendships," Hobbs shared on the school's Facebook page. "I'm grateful for the chance to pour into the next generation of Fairview athletes. I'm excited to help these players grow on and off the court, build a positive team culture, and represent Fairview with pride. I can't wait to get started. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle."
Hobbs isn't the only familiar face stepping into a bigger role. Fairview has also named Cody Sammons its new athletic director, effective June 1. A former multi-sport Eagle and the school's current baseball coach, Sammons has deep roots in the community—he's a fifth-generation Eagle, with a family tree that runs through Fairview's gyms and fields.
"It's something I've always wanted to do," Sammons said. "My bachelor's is in sports management. I interned at the YMCA, helping with day-to-day operations. When Coach Rick Lambert retired, I knew it was time to get my foot in the door."
For Sammons, this isn't just a job—it's a calling rooted in family and hometown pride. "My family has always been so proud of the Westwood community. My dad played football here. My grandparents graduated here. My mom went to school here. I'm a fifth-generation Eagle. In a small school, everybody knows you, and it's a family atmosphere."
With his wife Abbagail—also a Fairview grad—and their son Myles (who will surely be a future Eagle) by his side, Sammons is ready to lead. And with Hobbs back on the sidelines, the Fairview volleyball program is poised for an exciting new chapter.
