Joplin High School's baseball team fell 11-1 to the top-ranked Class 5 Willard High School Tigers on a blustery Tuesday at JHS, but the Eagles had plenty to celebrate after being named the 2026 Academic Team in Class 6 by the Missouri Baseball Coaches Association. Even on a tough day at the plate, the Joplin Eagles proved that true champions shine brightest in the classroom. While the diamond brought a challenging 11-1 loss to top-ranked Willard High School on a blustery Tuesday, the Eagles soared to an academic victory that deserves a standing ovation.

The Missouri Baseball Coaches Association named Joplin the 2026 Academic Team in Class 6, boasting an impressive 3.8 team grade point average. That's no small feat—it edged out Kansas City Liberty High School (3.75) and Nixa High School (3.74), putting the Eagles at the head of the class. Nine players earned All-State Academic Individual Awards for their dedication to hitting the books: David Bhend, John Jasper, Layne Royle, Brecken Green, Junior Lowery, Lake Ward, Hayden Wolf, Jensen Stout, and Isaac Yust.

On the field, the story was different. Willard's Tigers, ranked No. 1 in Class 5, pounced early with a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ricky Riggs scored when Gavin Leek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Matthew Burns came home on a Tyler Davis sacrifice fly. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth, capitalizing on an error and a sacrifice grounder.

Joplin's lone bright spot came in the bottom of the fourth when Jacob Porter scored on a fielder's choice after a Jensen Stout groundball. But after a quiet fifth inning, Willard unleashed a six-run explosion in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Kellen Merryman scored on a Matthew Burns line drive, and Levi Hilton made it 7-1 on a bases-loaded walk. Two more bases-loaded walks pushed the lead to 8-1, and a passed ball brought in Evan Arnold for a 9-1 advantage. Jackson Redd sealed the deal with a single to right, plating Kade Taylor and Davis.

John Jasper went 2-for-2 for the Eagles, and Jacob Porter finished 1-for-3 with a run. Starter Brecken Green took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits over three innings, with three strikeouts and four walks. For Willard, Jackson Redd drove in four runs, and Matthew Burns went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Tigers starter Levi Hilton earned the win, giving up one run on five hits while striking out four and walking one in five innings.

Now sitting at 13-12, the Eagles are ready to bounce back. They'll travel to Parkview High School (1-13) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., looking to turn their academic momentum into a win on the field. After all, a team that can top the class in GPA knows a thing or two about coming out on top.
