The latest 247Sports recruiting rankings for the 2026 class have delivered a stark reality check for the North Carolina Tar Heels and their new head coach, Mike Malone. The gap between Chapel Hill and Durham is wider than ever, and it's not even close.
When the Tar Heels hired Mike Malone—a 2023 NBA champion head coach—they hoped he would reignite the program after Hubert Davis's five-year tenure. But so far, Malone hasn't been able to close the gap with Tobacco Road rival Duke. Jon Scheyer, who took over the Blue Devils a year after Davis, has built a commanding lead. Duke landed four players in 247Sports' top 100 for the 2026 class, while UNC managed just two.
Malone did recently secure a commitment from four-star wing Kevin Thomas, but the Tar Heels still have a mountain to climb before the 2026-27 season tips off. The transfer portal has brought some reinforcements: NC State's Matt Able, Virginia Tech's Neoklis Avdalas, Utah's Terrence Brown, and Northwestern's Cade Bennerman all add depth. And there's still hope on the recruiting trail, with unsigned targets like Mayfair (CA) guard Josiah Johnson (No. 57 overall), SPIRE Academy (OH) wing Alex Constanza, and North Shore (TX) wing Christian Gibson potentially giving the squad a late-cycle boost.
Make no mistake—it's not over for Malone. But Duke is once again projected as the ACC's top dog this winter. Malone will either need to get comfortable playing catch-up or truly transform the culture, much like he did with the Denver Nuggets before their championship run three years ago.
The odds reflect this divide. According to ESPN, Duke opens with the best odds to win the 2027 March Madness title, while North Carolina sits at seventh. Of course, preseason expectations aren't everything. Last November, the favorites were Purdue, Houston, Duke, and Florida—and nobody saw Michigan making a run. But for the Tar Heels, surprising people in March is a tougher ask. At minimum, though, a championship coach is bringing great talent to the fold—and that coach has already proven he knows how to win it all.
