When Glacier and Missoula Big Sky first clashed this season, fans were treated to a 12-9 slugfest. Thursday's rematch? A completely different story—a masterclass in pitching that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
Olivia Warriner delivered five scoreless innings, and Ava Grady closed the door with two more, leading the Wolfpack to a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Glacier High School. The dynamic duo in the circle proved once again why they're the backbone of this team.
"They are both very important to this team; that is how we roll is in the circle," said Glacier coach Gary Evans. "Having them show what they showed today gives us a lot of confidence going into the second half."
The game's only run came in the fifth inning. Sophia Frederick led off with a single, followed by a double from Tensley Conner—both on the first pitch they saw. Addy Cunningham then stepped up and delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Frederick and giving Glacier (10-3) the lead. Eagles pitcher Peyton Walters quickly regrouped, getting a groundout and flyout to strand Conner at third.
Warriner was nearly untouchable, allowing just one hit in five innings—a fourth-inning double by Sara Bjornson. Bjornson was left stranded at third after Warriner snagged a hard-hit line drive to end the frame.
"We had great defense today, a couple miscues, but nothing that cost us," Evans said. "We haven't been in a 1-0 game this year; we have scored a lot of runs. But this was a real softball game against a good team."
Warriner faced a jam in the second after walking two batters but escaped thanks to another line-drive grab that turned into a double play at first. Grady, who took over in the sixth, gave up two hits but struck out five in her two innings. She opened the seventh with back-to-back punchouts before allowing a single to Briella Wilson. The rally fizzled quickly as Grady struck out Elise Regan to seal the win.
"I just had to keep my composure and get to the next pitch," Grady said.
With the season series swept against Big Sky (9-4), Glacier now sets its sights on crosstown rival Flathead. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday—a game that promises even more intensity as the Wolfpack look to carry this momentum forward.
