The San Diego Gulls are soaring back into the playoffs, and the man leading the charge is sticking around. The Anaheim Ducks have signed Gulls head coach Matt McIlvane to a multi-year contract extension, a move that rewards the clear upward trajectory he has established for their AHL affiliate.

McIlvane, who took the reins in April 2023, has steered the Gulls to a playoff berth for the first time since the 2021-22 season. More impressively, the team's point total has increased in each of his three seasons at the helm, putting them on pace for their best full-season performance in several years. This consistent growth made the decision to extend his tenure an easy one for the Ducks' front office.

"Matt has been an integral part in the development and growth of our players and prospects in San Diego," said Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek. "Having increased San Diego's point total each season and leading the Gulls to a playoff berth this year, this was an easy decision. We are excited about what the future holds."

McIlvane's success in San Diego is built on a foundation of high-level international experience. Before joining the Ducks organization, he was a championship-winning head coach with Red Bull Salzburg in Europe's ICE Hockey League, capturing back-to-back titles. His resume also includes significant roles with Munich Red Bulls in the German DEL and on the coaching staff for Team Germany, where he was part of the silver medal-winning squad at the 2018 Olympic Games.

This blend of developmental focus and winning pedigree aligns perfectly with the Ducks' vision. McIlvane himself highlighted this alignment after his first development camp, stating, "Organizationally, the goal is very clear from the top. We know where we're headed, and so we're trying to get everything to align with that."
