The New England Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl appearance and boast one of the NFL's most exciting young quarterbacks, but lately, the biggest headlines have been about head coach Mike Vrabel—not the team's on-field success.
Reports surfaced in early March that Vrabel and NFL reporter Dianna Russini, both married to other people, were spotted together at an adults-only resort in Arizona. Since then, a steady stream of photos and rumors has kept the story alive, culminating in Vrabel taking a leave of absence on the final day of the NFL Draft.
Despite the off-field drama, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye isn't worried about any negative impact on the team. "No, I don't," Maye told the Associated Press when asked if the situation could hurt the Patriots. "I mean, he's our head coach. I think he's done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I'm just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready."
Maye believes the controversy will ultimately "take care of itself." Vrabel and Russini initially claimed the photos were taken out of context, but as more images surfaced, the pressure mounted. Russini resigned from The Athletic shortly after the initial leaks, while Vrabel admitted to having "some difficult conversations with people that I care about."
Through it all, Maye remains confident in his coach's ability to lead. "I know he's got the right mindset and I know he's a great human being," the third-year quarterback said. "I think he's … like I said, I love playing for him."
The Patriots are currently in Phase 2 of their voluntary offseason workout program, and Vrabel has been present for the sessions—a sign that the team is focused on football, no matter what's happening off the field.
