In the ever-churning world of NFL coaching rumors, the spotlight has shifted to New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel—and not just for his play-calling. According to prediction market Kalshi, there's now a 64% chance Vrabel will be pacing the sideline for the Patriots in Week 1. But that number took a dip this week following a TMZ report linking Vrabel to NFL reporter Dianna Russini during a boat outing in Tennessee back in June 2021, when she was pregnant.
The controversy first surfaced on April 7, when the New York Post published photos of the couple—both married to other people—holding hands, embracing, and enjoying time together at a pool in Sedona, Arizona. Since then, the story has simmered, raising questions about whether it could unsettle the Patriots' locker room.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, however, isn't worried. Speaking from the Truist Championship Pro-Am in Charlotte on Wednesday, the young signal-caller made it clear that Vrabel's off-field headlines won't derail the team's focus. "No, I don't," Maye told the Associated Press when asked if the situation would be a distraction. "He's our head coach. I think he's done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I'm just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready."
When pressed on whether the Patriots need to move past the controversy before the season kicks off, Maye was equally steadfast. "I think that'll take care of itself," he said. "I know he's got the right mindset, and I know he's a great human being. I think he's… like I said, I love playing for him."
For a team looking to rebuild and re-establish its identity, Maye's vote of confidence is a welcome sign. Whether Vrabel's off-field saga fades or lingers, the Patriots' quarterback is all-in on his coach—and that might be the most important play of the offseason.
