In a heartwarming tale of perseverance and homegrown talent, Dragons utility back David Richards has signed a new contract to stay with his beloved regional team. The 26-year-old, who can play wing, centre, or full-back, has become a key figure for the Men of Gwent this season—a remarkable turnaround for a player who nearly gave up on professional rugby just 12 months ago.
Richards returned to the Dragons for a second stint in July 2023 after lighting up the Super Rygbi Cymru with Newport RFC, helping the Black and Ambers claim the title. Since then, he's made 15 appearances and scored four tries, including a dramatic last-play winner against Zebre Parma last Friday night. His versatility and clutch performances have made him a fan favorite.
"I feel honored to be a part of the squad this year, something 12 months ago I'd probably given up on," Richards said. "To have been a part of a team that feels like it's really building to something has been pretty special."
Richards' journey to this point is a story of resilience. A product of the Dragons academy, he debuted for the senior side in April 2022 against Gloucester. But injuries derailed his progress, forcing him to step away from the professional game. During that time, he took a role as a new business executive with the Dragons while playing for Newport, rebuilding his confidence and fitness.
Born in Abu Dhabi and educated at Haberdashers' Monmouth School, Richards earned a new professional contract at the start of this season and has since cemented his place in the squad. His new deal is a testament to his hard work and determination.
"It's great news that Dai has extended his stay," said Dragons senior coach Matt O'Brien. "He's another player who has come through our pathway at the region and has now established himself within the senior squad with some strong performances this season, showing some great one v one ability and scoring some very important tries for the club. He's a great character in the group, and Dai's story is one of real resilience and determination."
