Former Germany defender Niklas Süle has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season. The 30-year-old Borussia Dortmund centre back will end his playing days with his contract expiring, the club said on Thursday.

In a move that has stunned the football world, Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Süle has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the season—at just 30 years old.

The former Germany international centre-back, whose contract with Dortmund expires this summer, revealed his decision on the "Spielmacher" podcast by 360Media. "I would like to announce that I will be ending my career this summer," Süle said, with the club republishing his heartfelt statement.

For context, the average retirement age for male footballers in Germany hovers around 35, with legends like Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer still going strong into their 40s. Süle's early exit, however, has been brewing for some time, driven by a career marked by persistent injuries.

The final straw came during a match in Hoffenheim in April, where he suffered a knee injury. In a raw moment that Süle described on the podcast, he became emotional after Dortmund's team doctor and a physio examined his knee in the dressing room, fearing a potential cruciate ligament tear. "I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes. In that moment, I really thought: 'It's torn,'" he recalled.

Though an MRI later revealed it wasn't a cruciate tear, the scare was enough to cement his decision. "When I received the good news, it was 1,000% clear to me that it was over," Süle explained. "I couldn't imagine anything worse than looking forward to life—being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children—only to then have to come to terms with my third cruciate ligament tear."

Dortmund had already announced they would not extend his contract after four seasons with the club. Süle's career began at Hoffenheim before a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in 2017, where he amassed an impressive trophy haul: five Bundesliga titles, two German Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2020. He joined Dortmund in 2022 and also represented Germany 49 times between 2016 and 2023.

"Thank you for everything, Niki. Together, we've enjoyed great moments and celebrated a few titles," Dortmund said in a tribute. As Süle prepares to hang up his boots, the football community reflects on a defender whose talent was undeniable, even if injuries cut his journey short.
