Donovan Mitchell isn't letting his shooting slump define him. After another tough outing against the Detroit Pistons in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Cleveland Cavaliers' star guard is focused on the bigger picture.
Mitchell struggled from the field, shooting just 6-of-20 for 18 points in a game that could have sealed the series for Cleveland. Instead, the Pistons forced a decisive Game 7, keeping the Cavs from advancing to face the New York Knicks—who are waiting in the Conference Finals after sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers.
"Can't dwell on it. I missed shots tonight. Do I take some tough shots? Sure, I can say about every game," Mitchell said in his post-game press conference alongside James Harden. "I'm not here to look at the fact that I missed shots, but the overall impact of the game. Tonight I missed shots, which I've been making every game in this series; tonight I didn't. I ain't worried about that, it's moreso about everything else."
The Cavaliers looked out of sync, lacking the energy and urgency you'd expect from a team with a chance to reach the conference finals. Detroit, meanwhile, played with relentless hustle. Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 21 points, but it was their depth that made the difference—six players scored in double figures.
Harden did his part, leading Cleveland with 23 points, but it wasn't enough against a hungry Pistons defense. The Cavs needed their stars to take over, and Mitchell knows that starts with him. For a player of his caliber, these struggles are unusual, but he's not letting them shake his confidence.
Game 7 is now a clean slate. Mitchell and the Cavaliers have a chance to learn from this setback and prove they can close when it matters most. For fans and players alike, it's a reminder that even the best have off nights—but champions find a way to bounce back.
