The rookie quarterback cited OTA obligations, not politics, for missing his team's White House visit.

When the Indiana Hoosiers made their championship visit to the White House this week, all eyes were on one notable absence—and President Donald Trump didn't hold back his thoughts.

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, fresh off leading Indiana to its first national title, skipped the traditional celebration. His reason? Not politics, but practice. The rookie quarterback is already deep into organized team activities (OTAs) with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team that selected him with the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

"I'm not happy, but that's okay," Trump said, addressing the situation during the visit. He then clarified Mendoza's explanation, though he mistakenly referred to OTAs as "spring training." Still, the president added, "If he was not here for other reasons like he didn't like Trump or he didn't want to come, I wouldn't have even mentioned him. But he's a great guy actually and he is actually a big fan of what we're doing for our country."

Mendoza had hinted at the scheduling conflict during a press conference last week. "I'm on the bottom of the totem pole here," the rookie explained. "I've got to prove myself. I can't miss practice. I don't think that's a good look. I want to best serve my teammates."

It's a smart move for the young signal-caller, who is expected to start the season learning behind veteran Kirk Cousins. After a historic college campaign—completing 72% of his passes for 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just six interceptions—Mendoza knows his NFL journey is just beginning. Missing a White House visit might raise eyebrows, but showing up for his new team's OTAs? That's the kind of commitment that builds a career.
