In a surprising turn of events, former President Donald Trump has completely reversed his stance on LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, now advocating for the return of LIV players to the tour. This is the same man who once called the PGA Tour "stupid" and urged players to "take the money" and join the Saudi-backed league.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump made his position clear: "I do believe that all of the golfers should be playing – the great golfers – should be playing against each other." He specifically mentioned wanting to see matchups like Rory McIlroy vs. Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm vs. Scottie Scheffler, adding, "There's something nice about all of the players playing together."
This dramatic shift comes at a critical time for LIV Golf. The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, which owns LIV, has confirmed it will no longer fund the league beyond 2026, signaling potential collapse. To make matters worse, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan is resigning as LIV's chairman, and the league has already postponed its New Orleans tournament scheduled for late June.
Trump's change of heart is particularly notable given his history with LIV. When the league first launched, he was its most vocal supporter, largely because it brought significant business to his courses. LIV held four tournaments at Trump National Doral and events at two other Trump properties. In fact, LIV still has a tournament scheduled at Trump's Virginia course May 7-10, which Trump confirmed will go ahead as planned.
Now, with the PGA Tour hosting one of its signature events—the Cadillac Championship—at his Doral course, Trump seems to have flipped allegiances entirely. "The Tour wants to have the best players," he said. "You can't have the best players if they're boycotting."
For golf fans, this could mean the end of the fractured landscape that has divided the sport's biggest names. The prospect of seeing top players from both tours competing against each other again is exciting news for anyone who loves the game—and for those who love wearing the gear of their favorite players, it means more epic matchups to look forward to.
